A legacy of two brothers...

The Hermitage was settled by two sea-faring brothers, Captain Frank and Major George Halstead on the section of Lake Minnetonka known as Upper Main Lake.

Both brothers served in the navy during the Civil War and when the conflict ended, the Captain returned to the Minnesota home he loved so well. Here he was a driving force behind the Lake Minnetonka Improvement Commission and also built the Mary, one of two steamers that carried tourists around the lake. A quiet, reclusive man, Frank became known as a hermit and his home, the Hermitage.

Following the Captain’s untimely death, Major George Halstead arrived to tend to his brother’s affairs and was so taken with the lake and the Hermitage that he turned it into a tourist attraction, where people would come to picnic and listen to his entertaining stories.

A fire destroyed the Hermitage in 1901 and today, only the name and its fascinating heritage live on. download hermitage shores history fact sheet
